A rural urgent care has fewer clinicians living within a short drive than a clinic in a city. When a permanent clinician leaves or takes time off, the locum clinician who covers the gap may have to come from another town. A shift at your clinic then costs that clinician more than the same shift near home: hours of driving, and sometimes a night away.
Rural urgent care staffing with locum clinicians works when the shift accounts for that cost. This guide covers what you can change: how you group shifts, what you say about travel, how you describe the clinic and how early the paperwork starts.
Why Distance Changes Rural Urgent Care Staffing
A clinician comparing two shifts counts the whole day. A twelve-hour shift with a two-hour drive each way takes sixteen hours and pays for twelve. At the same rate, the shift closer to home pays more for each hour of the clinician's time.
You can't move the clinic. You can change three things: how many paid hours one trip covers, who pays for the trip, and how much the clinician knows before deciding.
Group Rural Shifts Into Blocks
A single shift far from home is the hardest one for a clinician to accept. Two or three consecutive shifts spread the same drive across more paid hours. If your gap is a week of leave or an open position, post the shifts so one clinician can take several in a row.
Say in the shift details which shifts are consecutive, so a clinician sees a block and not separate days. Consecutive long shifts with a hotel night between them are tiring. Let a clinician take part of a block if that's what they can do.
State the Travel and Lodging Terms
Decide before you post whether you'll pay anything toward travel or lodging, and put the answer in the shift details. You have three options.
- You pay nothing extra. The rate then has to cover the trip. A rate that fills a shift in a city may not fill yours.
- You raise the rate. The clinician decides how to spend the difference, and you have nothing extra to administer.
- You provide lodging. A room you've booked near the clinic removes a task and a cost for the clinician.
On a Rediworks shift, the rate you post is what a clinician weighs against the trip. How a travel payment or a provided room is taxed is a question for your accountant.
Whatever you choose, tell the clinician what's nearby: where to stay, where to eat after a late close, and how winter roads or seasonal closures affect the drive.
Describe the Rural Urgent Care Exactly
A clinician who has only worked in larger markets will have questions about a small clinic. Answer them in the shift details.
- Whether they're the only provider on site, and who else works the shift
- What's on site, such as x-ray and lab testing, and who operates each
- Where patients go when they need a higher level of care, how far away that is, and how transfers are arranged
- Who they can call with a question during the shift, and whether that person is on site
- Expected visits for that shift
- The ages you see, and any service lines such as occupational health
Give the real answer even when it makes the shift less appealing. A clinician who learns on arrival that they're alone with no x-ray tech is unlikely to come back. A clinician who knew in advance and accepted is suited to the shift. What locum clinicians look for in an urgent care shift covers the details that apply to any clinic.
Start Credentialing Before the Staffing Gap
A locum clinician who drives in from another area is new to you, so you have a file to build. If your clinic is near a state line, the nearest clinicians may be licensed in the neighboring state and not in yours. A new state license has the longest lead time of anything in the file, so that clinician can't cover a gap that starts next week.
Two habits shorten this. Post the gaps you can predict, such as planned leave and seasonal volume, as soon as you know the dates. Once a clinician has a complete file with you, keep it current, so the next booking only needs a check of expiration dates.
The urgent care locum credentialing guide covers the file. Licensure compacts for locum clinicians explains which roles can work across state lines on one license.
Build a Small Group of Returning Locum Clinicians
For a rural clinic, the most useful result of a locum shift is a clinician who'll make the drive again. They know the building, the EMR and your staff, and you have their file. A few returning clinicians can cover more of your gaps than a new clinician each time.
Before a clinician leaves, tell them the dates you expect to need next. Approve their hours promptly. Ask what would make the trip easier, and fix what you can. What locum turnover costs a clinic explains how to keep a returning roster.
When an Agency Fits a Rural Urgent Care Better
Some rural gaps can't be covered one shift at a time. You may need a clinician for weeks or months, from another region, with flights and housing arranged. A traditional agency with a recruiter and a travel desk does that work and charges for it. What to read in a staffing agency contract covers the terms.
A self-service marketplace fits the gaps a clinician can drive to. Rediworks is a self-service marketplace for urgent care shifts. You post the clinician type, dates and shift details, and clinicians see the rate and location before they apply. Sign up to post shifts.
